Cameron Haddow joined the Domainex team in July 2021 as a Scientist within the assay biology team. For our next ‘Meet the team’ blog, Cameron tells us a bit more about his role at Domainex and his experience to date.
How did you get into a career in drug discovery?
“I took an A-level in biology and enjoyed the small amount of biochemistry included in the course, so I decided to study for a degree in biochemistry at the University of Bath. I wanted to get a taste of what working in industry would be like, so I selected a course which included a placement year which I undertook at AstraZeneca. I enjoyed the placement so much that I wanted to continue working in industry post-university.”
Can you give us a brief insight into your day-to-day activities?
“I usually spend my time developing and running biophysics-based assays. Often this uses our Grating-Coupled Interferometry (GCI) and MicroScale Thermophoresis (MST) instruments, so I usually spend my mornings immobilising or labelling proteins ready for compound testing during the afternoon. I typically spend my afternoons between the lab and write-up areas, setting up experiments and writing them up or completing other tasks such as preparing slides for meetings or preparing proposals for prospective clients.”
What are your favourite parts of your role and working at Domainex?
“The people! Everyone here is incredibly friendly and happy to share their time in discussing data, problem solving and helping one another.”
What do you find the most challenging?
“Balancing in and out of lab work. We invest a lot of time into client presentations to convey all the information as clearly as possible which is essential but it can sometimes be challenging managing the different aspects of my role.”
Do you have any advice for someone interested in a career in drug discovery?
“It’s great to work on something you are passionate about, so if you have a specific area of interest that’s a great place to start, but equally you can learn about a range of different areas of science very quickly in a setting such as an integrated CRO.”
And finally, what do you enjoy doing outside work?
“I enjoy walking my dog and going for bike rides.”
